Abstract

The main objective of this exploratory study is the comparative analysis of the temperament structure in two populations differentiated as to age and type of social-professional activity for the purpose of selection to top performance sport. Aviation pilots and schoolboys were run on five questionnaires (MAS, MPI, STI, GZTS, and TTS) measuring 24 temperament traits. Both samples were selected for level of reacitivity on the basis of quartile section of results of assessment of reactivity. Reactivity in pilots was measured using the EEG alpha index and in schoolboys using achievement scores in a motoric efficiency test in two situation differing in stimulation load. Results were analyzed using factor analyisis, main components and Kaiser Varimax method. The structure of temperament in high- and low-reactive pilots and low-reactive schoolboys did not differ as far as the contents of the first two factors, psychologically, identified as energeticness and emotionality, are concerned, though opposite signs of factor loadings were obtained in the schoolboy group. Differences in temperament structure between pilots and schoolboys, especially as regards configuration of factors in the high reactive schoolboys, are probably attributable to developmental factors and to the functioning of the stimulation reinforcement physiological mechanism.
