Abstract des Autors

Twelve members of a professional ballett company were tested for their ability to detect small changes in position of their knee joints. There were five males and seven females, averaging 25 years of age. The time of serious training in ballet averaged fourteen years. A group of healthy, active age-matched controls was also tested. Results indicated that the dancers were more sensitive to detection of onset of motion at the knee joint. It is concluded that sense of joint motion and position can be affected by extensive athletic training. It might further be inferred that muscle and tendon receptors play a significant if not dominant role in this sensation.
