Abstract

The Sport Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) was developed because of the growing interest in and importance of satisfaction in sport. More than 400 male and female athletes 10 to 39 years of age, from 13 different sports and representing a wide range of ability levels took part. Athletes responses to general, open-ended questions provided the basis upon which sources of satisfaction were determined. The six dimensions which emerged include the sport or game itself (Sport/Game), Practice, Coach, Teammates, Opposition, and Personal Ability and Performance. Descriptive item lists were then developed for each source of sport satisfaction and an item analysis performed. The subdivided test method for reliability indicated a strong internal consistency for all scales in the SSI with an average corrected estimate of .85. Test-retest results show good stability over time for all scales with an average correlation of .74. The intercorrelation of the component scales of the SSI indicate the likelihood of a common satisfaction factor as well as discriminably different areas of sport satisfaction. Verf.-Referat
