Abstract

Twelve males (6 abstainers and 6 moderate drinkers) were analyzed for the influence of varying dosages of alcohol on cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, and phychological responses, and endurance performances. The subjects underwent three separate exercise tests which consisted of progressive workloads at three minute stages on the bicycle ergometer. Prior to each exercise test, the subjects consumed either a placebo (0 ml/kg), small (.44 ml/kg) or moderate (.88 ml/kg) dose of 190 proof ethanol. Although significant differences were obtained for postdosage rest and the last minute of the 720 kpm/min workload, overall analysis of the statistical procedures supported the conclusion that functions of heart rate, blood pressure, minute ventilation, oxygen uptake, perceived exertion, lactate and endurance performance is not affected by a small and moderate dose of alcohol.
