Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aerobic capacity on cardiovascular responses to static, dynamic, and combined work. Eighteen young healthy male subjects were divided into three groups on the basis of aerobic capacity (Maximum oxygen uptakes: 47+-5, 55+-1, and 64+-3 ml/kg/min). Treadmill exercise was 30 of maximal aerobic capacity and static handgrip contractions were 20 of maximum. Heart rates were determined by electrocardiography every 15 sec, while blood pressures were measured by standard auscultatory methods every 30 sec of the 5 min work bouts. Pressure rate products were calculated using steady state heart rate and systolic blood pressure data. A group-by-trials MA NOVA revealed that aerobic fitness level had no effect on any measure during exercise. Univariate analyses indicated that heart rates and pressure rate products were greatest in combination work and least in static work. Diastolic pressures were highest in static work and lowest in dynamic exercise. There were no differences in systolic pressure between static and dynamic work, but in both conditions pressures were significantly lower than in combination exercise. It was concluded that aerobic capacity was not related to cardiovascular responses to relative loading by static, dynamic, or combined work. Implications for heavier combination work by coronary-prone individuals were discussed. Verf.-Referat
