Abstract

As yet very few data describe the response of female masters athletes to maximal exercise tests. However, that which has been published is encouraging. Older women who train to maximize performance have a marked advantage over their less active peers in the cardiorespiratory and body composition components of physical fitness. Incorporating regular exercise into the daily routine will aid in maintaining adequate physiological function as one grows older. Although no one can guarantee that regular physical activity will prolong life, ample evidence suggests that it can enhance the quality of life for older individuals who value their independence and who look forward to active and enjoyable retirement years.
