Abstract

The cross-sectional area of muscle, subcutaneous fat, and bone in four male healthy subjects were measured by means of CT (computerized tomography) and UT (ultrasonic circular compound system) methods, in order to establish an efficacy of the ultrasonic method as a tool for estimating tissue area of human limbs. Cross-sectional photos of forearm, upper arm, leg, and thigh were taken by means of both CT and UT methods. The boundary line between fat and muscle, or muscle and bone was drawn on a tracing paper which was superimposed correctly on the cross-sectional photos taken by CT and UT methods. It is considered that UT method used in the present study is an effective system for measuring the cross-sectional area of muscle, fat, and bone in human extremities. Verf.-Referat
