Abstract

This paper analysed the result forces emanating from rugby union scrummaging using the hip and crotch binding techniques with a view to making recommendations designed to reduce or eliminate injuries and provide a basis for possible rule changes. Kinetic data were obtained from two forward packs scrummaging against a Kistler force platform incorporated into an extended scrum machine. By systematically moving the front row of the scrum along the scrum machine with each trial, data on all three front row players could be obtained under each test condition. Results indicated the force at wich the front row impacted the scrum machine exceeded the threshold for injury to the spine. The magnitude of this force was related directly to the mass of the scrum and its speed at impact. Adoption of the hip binding technique reduced the vertical force acting on the front row, reducing the vulnerability of the scrum to collapse. In addition, little forward force would be lost through the adoption of this technique. Verf.-Referat
