Abstract

In this paper, examples of current interest areas of exercise endocrinology are reviewed, and topics for future research are pointed out. Special attention is drawn to the possible involvement of central command in the regulation of neuroendocrine activity and fuel mobilization in exercise. Furthermore, it is pointed out that several new putative messengers have been discovered, but their role during exercise is presently unknown. Finally, physical training may induce adaptations within the neurohormonal system and its target cells. The unravelling of both the mechanisms responsible for the development of the adaptations and of their molecular nature, as well as determining the significance of the adaptations in prevention and treatment of disease and ageing represent a great challenge for the future.
