Abstract

Three cases of severe paroxysmal tachycardia occurring in young apparently healthy athletes with no other evidence of cardiac disease are referred. Described arrhythmias are: sustained ventricular tachycardia in one case, prolonged supraventricular tachycardia at high heart rate in two cases; such arrhythmias were closely associated with a training session performed during 24 hour Holter monitoring; they caused no symptom despite the high heart rate. Our cases allow to confirm: the presence of serious hyperkinetic asymptomatic arrhythmias in athletes, occurring without clinical signs of hemodynamic involvement; the possible absence in such athletes of any signs of cardiac disease; the close association between physical effort and rise of such dangerous arrhythmias; the high sensibility of Holter monitoring in detecting these arrhythmias, provided a physical training period is inserted during monitoring.
