Maximal aerobic power, ventilatory and respiratory compensation thresholds during arm cranking and bicycle ergometry

Abstract
To determine the differences in cardiorespiratory responses between arm and leg work, 19 active male volunteers underwent two separate progressive incremental bicycle ergometry (BE) and arm cranking (AC) work tests on electrically braked cycle ergometers until volitional exhaustion. Maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), ventilation threshold (VT) and respiratory compensation threshold (RCT) were calculated. VO2max, maximum work time and maximum workload were all significantly greater during BE, as was heart rate. Respiratory threshold responses were also significantly greater in absolute terms and as a percentage of VO2max during BE. It was concluded that the lower VO2max scores during AC were a consequence of the smaller muscle mass and a reduced central circulatory response. The greater VT and RCT scores during BE seem related to muscle mass. However, other factors may also influence this finding. Verf.-Referat
