Abstract

Five healthy sportsman were studied for plasma catecholamines during exercise of constant intensity (200 W) and various duration (6, 20 and 45 min). The epinephrine levels were found to be significantly increased in dependence on exercise duration (depletion of glycogen reserves in working muscles? mental stress?) and so were norepinephrine levels (increase of relative work load). The ratio between both neurohormones has however not changed significantly. It follows from the discussion that the deduced stimuli to an increase in catecholamine secretion during prolonged exercise could on a general level be identical with stimuli acting during short time exercise of varying intensity.
