Abstract

It was the purpose of this study to compare the upward and downward limbs of the trajectory of a ball in flight. More specifically, it was the purpose of this study to determine and compare the range of the upward limb with the range of the downward limb of trajectories of selected balls thrown for distance, to determine and compare the initial angle of release with the final angle on return to the same plane of selected balls thrown for distance, and to determine and compare the time of flight of selected balls from release to apex of trajectory with time of flight from apex to height from when it was released for balls thrown for distance. It was found that the range of the upward limb for each ball was greater than the range of the downward limb; that time of flight to the apex was less than time of flight from apex to height released; and that the angle of release was less than the angle of return to the same plane as thrown. Therefore, it was concluded that the trajectory of a ball in flight is a skewed curve with the range of the upward limb greater than the range of the downward limb, the time of flight up is less than the time of flight down, and the descent of a ball in flight is steeper than the ascent.
