Abstract

The purpose of the present series of experiments was to investigate the metabolic consequences of reduced muscle temperature in connection, mainly, with intensive dynamic exercise. The specific aims were: 1. to eveluate the needle biopsy technique in terms of methodological error; 2. to investigate the influence of a moderate reduction of muscle temperature on the relation between anaerobic and aerobic energy yield; 3. to study the effects of a moderate reduction of muscle temperature on the phosphagen concentrations and the dynamics of glycolysis in type I and type II human skeletal muscle fibres during intensive dynamic exercise; and 4. to study the influence of temperature on fatiguability and glycolytic metabolism in fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscles during supramaximal intermittent stimulation.
