Abstract

The integrated EMG of m. quadriceps femoris (vastus medialis) was investigated during a graded ergometric loading till exhaustion. Simultaneously with EMG, work intensity, oxygen consumption, carbon dioxyde production and lactate concentration in blood were recorded. Subjects of the study were 136 high level sportsmen. The relationships between integrated EMG, work intensity, oxygen consumption, excess CO2 and lactate were studied by correlation and partial correlation analyses. A high positive first order correlation between the integrated EMG and each of the above mentioned indices was established. Significant partial correlations however, all the other indices being on a constant level, were found between integrated EMG and lactate concentrations in blood, and between integrated EMG and work intensity only. The exponential dynamics of the integrated EMG and its relationship with the indices of metabolism were interpreted in relation to the recruitment of motor units (MU) of different metabolic and electrophysiological characteristics.
