Abstract des Autors
An association between obesity and breathlessness at rest or on exertion has long been recognized. Physicians are aware of this and generally advise loss of weight for fat people who are breathless, whether the breathlessness is secondary to heart or lung disease or thought to be a result of the obesity itself. After much research over the last 20 years it is now recognized that there are many ways in which obesity can effect the function of the lungs. This article reviews these effects of obesity on lung function at rest and on the cardiorespiratory response to exercise, in subjects without heart or lung disease, and the improvements which occur with weight loss.
