Abstract

Trained hypertensive (n = 13) and normotensive (n = 10) middle-aged subjects (mean age 54 a) engaged in a 40-min bout of bicycle ergometer exercise at an intensity of 60 of their maximal oxygen uptake. Postexercise systolic and diastolic blood pressure were monitored for 2 h at regular intervals. The meansystolic blood pressure was reduced in the normotensive group from minute 9 tominute 100. In the hypertensive group it was reduced from minute 7 to minute 120. There was no difference between the groups in pattern of average systolicblood pressure response after exercise; however the hypertensive subjects had a more pronounced reduction in systolic blood pressure, in comparison to the average resting values, than did the normotensive subjects. The postexercise diastolic blood pressure wasnot different from the average resting values in either group. These data demonstrate a postexercise reduction in systolic blood pressure for 90 to 120 min as a result of 40 min of bicycle ergometer exercise at 60 of maximal oxygen uptake. Verf.-Referat
