Abstract

In order to test the applicability of the use of only one gas analyzer for estimating maximal and submaximal oxygen intake, data on 147 maximal and 74 submaximal oxygen consumption tests were collected. VO2 was determined via useof (1) both an oxygen (02) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer, (2) an O2 analyzer only and an assumed R value of 1.0, and (3) a CO2 gas analyzer only and a assumed R value of 1.0. Results indicated that the use of only an O2 gasanalyzer for precise estimation of VO2 predicts criteria of submaximal (r=.99,sy.x = 26.6 ml) and maximal (r=.99, sy.x66.2 ml) oxygen intake. Such was not the case for the use of only the CO2 gas analyzer. It was concluded that the use on only an O2 gas analyzer is acceptable for estimation of oxygen consumption. Verf.-Referat
