Abstract

Coaches around the world continue to search for information and assistance tounderstand their players and motive them to perform at their maximum. Personality and motivation tests continue to be extensively promoted to satisfythis demand. The inaccuracy and problems associated with these tests are examined, together with the damage which can accompany their application by untrained personnel. A clear distinction is made between the use of these testsfor research and their use for clinical purposes. Those using these tests areasked not to give the false impression that they hold all the answers, whilecoaches are advised not to view such tests as the panacea for predicting thebehaviour of their sportsmen. Rather coaches are encouraged to become moreaware of the current research in sport psychology, and to integrate this knowledge with experience gained from a sharper perception of their players behaviour.
