Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine a procedure for selection of a workload for administering the Astrand-Rhyming test. Max VO2 was measured for 60 male college students using the Balke Treadmill Test of optimal work capacity. The max VO2 values were used to establish two equal groups. One group of30 subjects was randomly designated the experimental group and the other served as a cross validation group. The experimental group was tested to gather data on the independent variables of age, height, weight, resting heart rate, resting blood pressure, one minute exercise heart rate, leg length standing and on the bicycle ergometer. Data for the dependent variable of workloadwas obtained by subjecting the experimental group to workload tests on the bicycle ergometer. Subjects rode on successive days starting at a 600 kpm workload. The workload was increased 150 kpm each day until a heart rate near 165 bpm was elicited. A multiple regression equation utilizing age, weight, and one minute exercise heart to predict workload (R = 0,76) was developed by subjecting the data to a stepwise regression analysis. A nomogram for predicting workload was developed from the regression equation. The validation groupwas adminstered the Astrand-Rhyming Test using the established multiple regression equation to predict workload. The scores were used to estimate aerobic capacity by use of the Astrand-Rhyming Nomogram. A predictive validity coefficient of 0.65 and mean percent error estimation of 9.0 were obtained.
