Abstract

22 competitive swimmers competed in a 100 meter race at two different times of the day: 07.00 hours and 17.00 hours. The recorded time was used as a measurement of performance. Altogether 85 observations were made: 13 backstroke, 12 butterfly stroke, 11 breaststroke, and 45 free style. On 61 out of 85 occasions a faster time was observed in the evening, 23 disimproved in the evening and in ohne case there was no difference. Considering all the subjects as one group the performance was significantly better in the evening than in the morning. The difference appears to be of a sufficiently large magnitude to be of practical importance in both competitive events and in attempts to achieve new records. Verf.-Referat
