| abstract |
The characteristics data of the ECG and PCG of athletes, having shown a high rank performance for several years have been studied. It could be established, that: 1.) On the ECG: a) The presence of the hypertrophy signs of the myocardium is not characteristic; b) the incomplete, the physiological right bundle branche block, resp. is not more frequent, than in the nonsporting individuals of a similar age. It is not pathognomic, if it is found without any other sign refering to heart disease. It is in general not due to the hypertrophy of the right ventricle, but to the high volume diastolic filling of this chamber; c) the most characteristic sign of the ECG of the athletes is the high T wave in the V2-5 thoracial leads, showing the high volume diastolic filling of the left ventricle; d) thus the most striking is the ECG sign of the high volume diastolic filling of both ventricels, which can be seen the more frequently, the longer terms and the higher rank the sport performance is. 2.) On the PCG: a) In our material consisting of top athletes the most characteristic is the occurrence of a widely split I. heart sound and that of an ejection systolic nurmur; the rate of incidence of this latter acoustic sign and the increase of sport qualification is of a parallel tendency; b) the P2 on the apex and the III heart sound are not as characteristic as the afore mentioned acoustic signs but can be found frequently; c) an atrial sound and a widely split II. heart sound can be seen relatively rarely on the PCG of the athletes, the rarest is the widely and fixedly split II. heart sound; d) according to our investigations intop athletes, neither of the enumerated acoustic signs are of a pathological meaning.
