| abstract |
The percentage of intersex states is probably higher in sport than in any other sector of human activity because performance can be increased. For this reason, hermaphroditism and intersex states are of extreme concern to sports medicine. The methods used up to now to determine sex on the occasion of international competition are examind. After a critical review of current orientation on the matter, the results of personal research, carried out under rigorously controlled case and technical conditions and involving the measurement of sex chromatin on oral mucosa smears are reported. The method is judged to be easy to apply and can be used quickly on a large case series with no negative psychological reactions in the subjects. It is also scientifically reliable. Bearing in mind the methods validity limitations, represented by the Turner and Morris syndromes, it is held to be particularly suitable as an answer to the needs of sports medicine in this delicate sector.
