Abstract

The two Russian footballers, Eduard Streltsov (born 1937) and Valery Voronin (born 1939) had much in common. Born in the Moscow suburbs, they played for the same team (Torpedo) as well as for their country. Both were twice voted 'Player of the Year' and included in a symbolic world team. They also quit the game at the same time, in 1969. Streltsov and Voronin were the idol of the fans, handsome and talented. They were legendary players whose fame lives on today. They also shared something else: they became incurable alcoholics. The disease cut short their careers and their lives. Voronin was killed in a drunken brawl at the age of 45; Eduard Streltsov died of lung and liver cancer aged 53. They were tragic victims of their own success. Nothing of the seamier side of their amazing lives could be publicly revealed until after the fall of communism in the Soviet Union in late 1991. Versions of their fate, however, differ. One claims that because they did not fit the image of 'the New Soviet Man', the security police ensured that they left Soviet football in disgrace. I due giocatori Russi, Eduard Streltsov (nato nel 1937) e Valery Voronin (nato nel 1939) avevano molto in comune. Nati nei sobborghi di Mosca, giocarono per la stessa squadra (Torpedo) come pure per il loro paese. Entrambi fummo nominati "Giocatore dell'Anno" per ben due volte e furono inclusi in una simbolica squadra mondiale. Inoltre abbandonarono il calcio nello stesso periodo, nel 1969. Streltsov e Voronin, belli e pieni di talento, furono l'idolo dei loro ammiratori. Furono giocatori leggendari la cui fama aveva perdurato sino ad oggi. Condivisero anche qualcos'altro: divennero degli alcolizzati incurabili. La dipendenza interruppe bruscamente le loro carriere e la loro vite. Valery Voronin fu ucciso nel corso di una rissa tra ubriachi, all'età di 45 anni. Eduard Streltsov morì di cancro ai polmoni e al fegato, all'età di 53 anni. Furono le tragiche vittime del loro successo personale. Nulla del lato squallido delle loro straordinarie vite potè essere rivelato pubblicamente sino a dopo il crollo del Comunismo nell'Unione Sovietica, nel tardo 1991. I resoconti sul loro destino, però, differiscono. Uno sostiene che poiché non si adattarono all'immagine dell'"Uomo Nuovo Sovietico", la polizia per la sicurezza si assicurò che lasciassero il calcio sovietico con disonore.
