Abstract

Two aspects from the complex area of performance development in alpine skiing have been selected for this paper: the aspect of performance development at a junior age considering ASA points, and the aspect of attending schools with a ski-specific focus. The main emphasis lies on the second aspect - attending a school with ski-specific focus given that the author at present works as a trainer at the ski-specific grammar school in Stams and is thus well-informed about this problem area. Surveying the guidelines for establishing squads at a junior age in various federal states in Austria indicates a central emphasis on performance in competitions, i.e. race results. In order to critically investigate the selection procedure this inquiry examined the question whether or not a distinction between future elite skiers and other ski racers can be observed already at this age.
