Abstract
Sixteen years after the introduction of the Ministerial Decree of 18/2/1982 regulating Sports Medicine, the paper proposes amendments to the examination protocols designed to assess fitness for competitive sport. In particular, in the light of the thousands of such examinations performed in a 12-year period, it is suggested that the obligatory electroencephalogram required for certification as fit to engage in certain competitive sport serves no purpose and that it should be for the sports physician to decide (on the basis of anamnestic and/or clinical data) whether or not an EEG is required.
