Abstract des Autors

In order to obtain statistically significant data on the endogenous androgen steroid profiles of athletes, the authors conducted a statistical study by analyzing biological samples taken from 1000 athletes practicing different sports. Only male athletes were considered. The samples were taken without prior notice, out of competition, and were subsequently analyzed using routine procedures, approved by the CIO, of the FMSI's Rome Antidoping Laboratory. On the whole, 0.4% of the cases tested positive, one owing to abuse of narcotics and three to the use of anabolizing hormones. In general however the averages obtained show no special departures from the CIO's statistical data. Only a small number of the samples can make it supposed that there was an earlier intake of synthetic anabolizers, the displaying concentrations of androsterone and etiocholanolone that depart from the statistical mean, and displaying an inversion of the reciprocal relationship. This study may thus be of aid not only for a more in depth interpretation of routine laboratory data, but also may form support for hypothesizing possible relationships between the intake of synthetic anabolizers and alterations in the normal endogenous profile.
