Abstract

The use in sports cardiology of seminvasive diagnostic (transesophageal stimulation) or invasive (endocavital study) techniques is considered by many to be necessary for correct assessment of risk and for better prevention of complications - such as sudden death - in athletes suffering from arrhythmogenic pathology. From the forensic medicine point of view, while there are broadly no objections to an extensive use of transesophageal stimulation in an appropriate environment and under the supervision of skilled medical staff, there remain marked impediments to endocavital study of the athletic population, with due regard to the higher probability of severe complications which are against its application only for purposes of deciding whether a person is suitable for athletics.
