Abstract

Oxygen consumption, pulmonary ventilation, heart rate, lactate accumulation and power output were measured throughout graded arm exercise in six elite kayakers trained in prolonged kayak races. Our study revealed that maximal oxygen uptake of kayakers participating in the study is higher than that reported previously for paddlers trained for traditional distances. Exercising at 4 mmol/l lactate our subjects utilized 74 of their VO2max and this value is in line with that reported previously for world class kayak paddlers. However, peak lactate accumulation in our subjects is lower than in world class kayakers, which might suggest better adaptation to prolonged exercise. Verf.-Referat
