Abstract
It is the period from about 1890 to 1930 that will be the focus of this article. Developments in three interrelated areas will be reviewed and analysed: the relationships between menstruation, reproductive health and sport; the alleged maculinizing effects of sport on women; and gender and class bias in medical views of work and play.
