Abstract
The literature on competitive cycling injuries is reviewed. This article summarizes incidence, localisation and type of injuries, circumstances of origin, and potential risk factors. The incidence of cycling injuries appears to range from 2 to 7 per year. In some 50 of the injuries the upper extremities are involved. Almost 95 of the injuries are caused by a fall. Only one study investigated the risk factors, in which data was collected on helmet use, use of binding-type pedals and inspection of equipment. Further studies among Dutch cyclists are recommended.
