Abstract
A record was kept of all requests for medical assistance during regional fencing championships in the 1985-86 season. A total of 1365 fencers took part in 6802 bouts. The 58 requests for medical attention related to injuries were classified as follows: a) lesions caused by the opponents weapon (48); b) derangement due to functional overloading (14); c) injuries caused by direct bodily contact (9); d) other derangements (29), including ankle sprains (7) and cramp (7). The results indicate that injuries during fencing contests are infrequent and not serious in the majority of cases. Verf.-Referat
