Abstract
The protection provided by mouthguards in the prevention of orofacial injuries is well recognised and their use is recommended in all body contact sports as well as in certain other sports where orofacial injury may accidently occur such as soccer, basketball, hockey and squash. As no comprehensive study of the prevalence of orofacial injuries and use of mouthguards in Rugby League had been reported, the present investigation was undertaken in 1984. A questionnaire was completed by club, state and international Rugby League players. The responses indicate that at higher levels of competition there is a greater likelihood of incurring orofacial injury, and that mouthguards significantly decrease the risk of such injury.
