Abstract

Methandrostenolone (17 alphamethyl-17beta-hydroxy-androsta-1,4-diene-3-one) isa typical and important representant of the 17 alpha-methyltestosterone type anabolics (Hungarian trade name: NerobolR). Our laboratory has been involved in analytical work concerning methandrostenolone determinations for sports control since 1975. This paper gives a summary on the investigations on the metabolism and excretion of this substance which were necessary to meet requirements of sport control. It has been long known that the human organism produces a 6beta-hydroxy-derivative from methandrostenolone (MET). Later gaschromatography-mass spectrometry studies as well as examinations made by highpressure liquid chromatography and mass-spectrometry proved the presence of epicontrafigurated (17betamethyl-17alpha-hydroxy-androsta-1,4-diene-3-one) from of this compound in human urine after MET administration. Authors of latter works suspect beside 17-epimethandrostenolone (EMET) also the 6 betahydroxy 17-epimethandrostenolone in the urine. Screening tests for control purposes, however, use radioimmunoassay methods with antisera exclusively for MET or 17alpha-methyltestosterone measuring metabolites only ascross-reactivesubstances,; in addition, EMET and other compounds of epi-configuration crossreact to a very limited extent in the mentioned assays.
