Abstract

Limitations on the interpretation of the ECG attributable to both intra- and inter-observer variations are examined. The Bonner routine was used in the computerised reading of ECGs from 325 athletes taking part in the 1975 university Games and 262 normal sedentary controls of the same age. The results obtained are discussed in the light of both the technological data (few traces refused, good dependability of the response, high speed of execution, etc.) and the cardiological investigation. In particular, a reassessment is offered of the parameter left ventricular hypertrophy in the light of the inverse ratio between the ECG finding of high voltages in the precordial leads and the body mass index.
