Author's abstract
It has been a life-long ambition of mine to honour Steve Abala, who played a variety of sports in the best spirit, before he sustained injuries in a rugby league match from which led to his untimely death when only 36 years of age. This is the story of how I achieved only part of my objective. While $80,000 was raised towards a statue, it fell short of the $150,000 required. The problem was that while the sports community of the Northern Territory supported this project, Darwin's civic leaders did not appreciate the value of the statue.
