The presentation of public sculptures of sporting figures represents a new phase in the history of a transformed Oval although it may also be viewed as part of a nation-wide trend. My approach to this topic will be to survey each of the sculptures in chronological order. My intention is to discuss the artists and their subjects, the aesthetics of the sculptures, their physical location and manner of presentation. In passing I will address the politics of the selection of subjects which arises because of the determination to avoid duplicating honours for individual sportsmen.
