Author's abstract
Sporting sculptures have been part of the Sydney landscape since 1893 when Sir Henry Parkes commissioned a sculpture of young footballer, which was paradoxical given that he was no lover of organised sport. Philanthropist Basil Sellers funded eleven sculptures of cricketers, footballers and a barracker that were erected between 2008 and 2011. This article reflects on the outcomes of such representation, whether the objective of Sellers has been realised to bring art to a sports ground. There is also a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of a permanent exhibition of art at sports grounds.
