Abstract

This chapter aims to demonstrate how biomechanics can contribute to the effectiveness of the coaching process. Through the application of mechanical principles to biological systems biomechanics provides a relevant scientific tool. This chapter leads the reader through specific examples of how knowledge of biomechanics can assist the coach in the gym through the development of tacit knowledge in relation to how skills 'work' and how best to develop skills. This chapter explores key research themes applied to the sport of gymnastics, specifically the coaching biomechanics interface, the evolution of complex skills and how the changes in apparatus and code of points have influenced the development of skills, with examples drawn from the research presented on the female Tkatchev.
