N2  - School Physical Education in different countries of the world has to face numerous challenges with regard to its state and status in the educational setting. Several publications on the current situation of physical education have expressed continuing perceived concerns. The content of this chapter draws from the first representative study of physical education and school sport in Germany (DSB, 2006). The aims of the study were to describe and analyze the situation in the context of the current debate on the future of physical education from different perspectives, that is, from pupils' and teachers' perspectives as well as those from parents' and school Principals' perspectives. Before presenting the empirical study with its theoretical framework and design and highlighting selected findings, a few preliminary remarks, which deal with the importance and difficulty of conducting a survey on physical education, may help to better understand the background of the study.
