Abstract

An increased incidence of community-associated methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) infections has emerged within the athletic population. Originally thought of as a nosocomial infection (an infection that originates in a hospital), methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus has emerged among populations without traditional risk factors. Within the athletic population, CA-MRSA often presents as either skin or soft tissue infection. This article seeks to present a review of CA-MRSA including the recognition of outbreaks, modes of transmission, and preventative interventions for the strength and conditioning professional.
