Abstract

In 2010 an organisation called Football for Peace (F4P), a SIDP (Sport for International Development and Peace) NGO, expanded its network community-based peace building projects between Arab and Jewish communities in Israel into the complex and challenging urban setting of Jerusalem. At the same time it initiated an independent programme ten kilometres away on the other side ot the 'separation wall' in the 'neighbouring' Palestinian town of Bethlehem. After outlining the socio-historical and political context of the F4P programme as a whole this paper considers the particular features of the projects in Jerusalem and Bethlehem in an attempt to understand why the former has proven to be sustainable whereas the later has had to be discontinued. The author sheds light on the value and limitations of using a critical and pragmatic approach to such initiatives. Einleitung (geändert)
