Abstract des Autors

This article aims to describe a relatively new research field “sport and development”.
Firstly, the entire concept is presented especially with the focus on its use within the
international development; the definitions of the terms of sport and development are
provided in this first part. Within this concept sport is understood as a tool for social
change and not as an aim in itself. Furthermore, the important historical milestones are mentioned and then the concrete examples and experience from the development practice and projects are discussed. The theoretical part of the article also defines two different types of sport development organizations – sport plus and plus sport. The author mentions how sport projects are being financed and gives concrete examples of publications describing the whole concept. The areas of application are outlined and concrete organizations working with sport in the development field are presented. Afterwards, in the practical part, football is analyzed in a very concrete way as a tool for development. Project “Football for development” was selected as a detailed example and it is used to show the potential of sport and physical activities for intercultural learning (IL) and global education (GE). The concrete activities of the mentioned project are described and the relation with the aims of IL and GE is underlined. In conclusion the research problems in this field and critical aspects of the whole concept are outlined. Verf.-Referat
