Abstract

When the European and American economic models of sports are to be compared, one usually faces two options. The first one is to focus on practical issues and collect economic facts about sports finance, organisation and regulation. A second option consists in comparing theoretical assumptions adopted in sport economics to provide an economic modelling, for instance, of sports leagues with profit maximising teams and leagues with win maximising clubs; or pointing at the different results reached depending on wether one has opted for a Walrasian equilibrium model or a Nash equilibrium model of a league. An extensive literature is available about the second option - namely Andreff (2011), Késenne (1996, 2006, 2007), Sloane (1971), Szymanski (2003, 2004) and Szymanski & Késenne (2004) in Europe - so that we here present a comparison between the two sides of the Atlantic with regards to practical dimensions of sports models, including: 1. Overall sports organisation and finance, dwelling upon two recent studies: Amnyos (2008) and Humphreys und Ruseski (2009). 2. Professional sports finance. 3. Professional team sports organisation and regulation. Verf.-Referat
