abstract In der modernen Sportgeschichte sind abenteuerlustige Frauen bekannt, die bewiesen, dass sie auch Rekorde von männlichen Sporthelden brechen konnten. Als die Amerikanerin Gertrude Ederle 1926 den Englischen Kanal in Rekordzeit durchschwamm, wurde sie gleich als Heldin bezeichnet, und ihr Erfolg als ein Fortschritt für Frauenrechte gewertet. Ederle, die „Königin des Wassers“, war hoch angesehen. In diesem Artikel untersuchen wir ihre Rolle in der Geschichte des Streckenschwimmens für Frauen. Insbesondere erwähnen wir den Reiz des Wassers für weibliche Schwimmerinnen wie Ederle und diskutieren das Verhältnis von Wasser und Sexualität, das die Feministen beschrieben haben. Throughout the history of modern sport there have always been a small number of adventurous women who have taken up sporting challenges, shown consummate skill and broken the records of male sporting heroes. When American Gertrude Ederle swam the English Channel in record time in 1926 she was instantly recast in heroic muld and her success hailed as striking a blow for women's rights. In many ways, Ederle, "Queen of the Waters", was both privileged and restricted, acted upon and acting. Our aim in this paper is to illuminate the active and conscious roles Ederle played during her life in the production, perpetuation and/or subversion of both potentially liberating and constraining ideologies and practices around long distance swimming for women. In particular we explore the lure of the water to female swimmers such as Ederle and comment upon the relationships that feminists have drawn between water, agency, and sexual identity. Long distance swimming is sometimes claimed as a sport that brings you face to face with your deepest self. Ederle was always most at home in the water. Tout au long de l’histoire du sport moderne, il y a toujours eu un petit nombre de femmes aventureuses, qui ont relevé les défis sportifs, présenté des compétences affirmées et battu les records des héros sportifs mâles. Quand l’Américaine Gertrude Ederle traversa la Manche Bans un temps record en 1926, elle fut instantanément requalifiée d’héroïne et ses succès contribuèrent à stimuler les droits des femmes. De bien des manières, Ederle, «la reine des eaux» fut à la fois privilégiée et confinée, actrice et victime. Le but de l’article est d’illustrer le rôle actif et conscient joué par Ederle pendant sa vie dans la production, la perpétuation et/ou la subversion des idéologies et des pratiques de natation féminine de longue distance, celles qui libèrent potentiellement comme celles qui contraignent. Nous explorons notamment l’attractivité de l’eau pour des nageuses comme Ederle et commentons la relation que les féministes ont mis en évidence entre l’eau, l’action et l’identité sexuelle. La natation de longue distance apparaît parfois comme un sport qui place l’individu face à face avec lui-même. Ederle s’est toujours sentie dans l’eau comme chez elle. «J’ai d’abord nagé car je possédais des aptitudes», dit-elle, «ultérieurement, ce sentiment s’avéra être un véritable présage». Verf.-Referat
