Abstract

Die englischen Public Schools und die protestantische Kirche spielten in Britannien beim Aufkommen des modernen Sports eine prägende und innovative Rolle, vor allem die Ideologie der "Muscular Christianity", die später durch den britischen Imperialismus in die ganze Welt exportiert wurde. Fortfahrend werden diese Entwicklungen vor dem breiteren kulturellen Hintergrund der Viktorianischen Gesellschaft und ihrer vorherrschenden Beschäftigung mit Moral, Hygiene und Gesundheit eingeordnet. Dass im 20. Jahrhundert die Beziehung zwischen der protestantischen Kirche und dem Sport im Vereinigten Königreich verfiel, wird zwar eingeräumt, aber ebenso dargelegt, dass es jetzt Anzeichen dafür gibt, dass Kirche und insbesondere Sportseelsorge als ein Mittel der Kontaktanbahnung – insbesondere zur Jugend – zunehmen. Im letzten Abschnitt wird dementsprechend gezeigt, wie sich an der University of Gloucestershire Lehre und Forschung zu Sportseelsorgern entwickelt, die sich sowohl in kirchlichen als auch in nichtkirchlichen Umfeldern beruflich engagieren, in denen das Verständnis für die Rolle des Sports noch unzureichend entwickelt ist. Abstract

This article addresses the formative and innovative role which the English public schools and the Protestant church in Britain played in the growth of modern sport through what has been termed 'muscular Christianity'; an ideology subsequently exported around the globe via British Imperialism. The article then goes on to locate these developments against the wider cultural backdrop of Victorian society and its prevailing pre-occupation with morality, sanitation and health. The subsequent decline of the relationship between the Protestant church and sport in the UK during the 20th century is acknowledged, but it is also argued that there are now signs of church growth and specifically sports ministry as a means of outreach, especially to youth. Accordingly, the final section of the article outlines the teaching and research developing at the University of Gloucestershire, UK to resource sports ministry workers to engage professionally in both church and non-church settings where an understanding of the role of sport is under-developed. Ce papier porte d'abord sur le rôle formateur et innovateur que les écoles privées et l'Eglise Protestante ont joué en Grande-Bretagne dans la croissance du sport moderne à travers ce qui a été désigné comme la «Chrétienté Musculaire», une idéologie exportée par la suite autour du globe via l'Impérialisme Britannique. Ensuite, l'article place ces événements dans le fond culturel de la société Victorienne avec ses préoccupations dominantes sur la moralité, l'assainissement et la santé. Le déclin subséquent de la relation entre l'Eglise Protestante et le sport au Royaume-Uni au vingtième siècle est reconnu, pourtant il est évident qu'il existe des signes de croissance de l'église aujourd'hui, particulièrement dans le domaine du sport comme moyen de travail social de proximité, surtout en direction de la jeunesse. En conséquence, la section finale de l'article décrit la pédagogie et la recherche à l'Université de Gloucestershire pour ressourcer les agents du ministère des Sportifs afin que les jeunes s'engagent professionnellement tant dans l'église que dans des cadres laïques où la compréhension du rôle de sport est sous-développée.
