Abstract
The paper reports on a project investigating the history of the local sport culture in Münster. The project was launched in 2006 and involved three lecturers and 15 students. The aim was to develop an exhibition dealing with the main topics of local sport in Miinster. The relevant dimensions of local sport focused on are: sport clubs, physical education, university sport, sport facilities, DJK sport (a cathohlic sport organization), disabled sports, special sport events, sporting personalities, new trend sports, local sport associations, SC PreuBen Münster (Münster's leading football club), and public sports administration. During six months, the project group performed different research steps: examination of relevant literature, research in the city archive, research in the university archive, visits to museums with exhibitions on local history and sport, interviews with academic experts on local sport, interviews with contemporary witnesses, presentations of primary results, discussion of the exhibition concept, andpresentation of the layout and design. The paper deals with the experiences during the process and the principal findings about the local sport culture in Münster. Some examples of the exhibition will be presented. They show, for example, the significance the public sport administration has for the maintenance and availability of sport facilities. As far as the sport clubs are concerned, football is the leading sporting discipline that can be found in most clubs. In disabled sports, wheelchair basketball is the most successful discipline in Münster. Finally, the presentation will pay attention to the curious fact that Münster's leading football club, SC PreuBen Münster, has not lost its popularity despite its constant unsuccessfulness.
