Abstract

The goalkeeper's role in a handball team is very specific and carries a high level of responsibility. The goalkeeper's performance is defined by the number of saves against the total number of shots. Shots are classified in terms of the shooter's position when shooting. The shots made from a position closer to the goalkeeper's area are more efficient on average than those made from larger distances. The goalkeeper's performance in defending the goal is on average lower when shots are made from the 6-m line, from the wing, from a counter attack and from 7 m. This is also due to the fact that the possibility of a defender hindering the shooter decreases. The goalkeepers' performances at the European Championships which are dealt with here were outstanding. They contributed significantly to the success of their teams. The authors would thus like to establish the differences in the main goalkeepers' performance indicators at the three consecutive Men's European Championships held in 2002, 2004 and 2006.
