Abstract

The research aims at analyzing the competitive activity of rowers in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Garnes. The methods used in the research were as follows: analysis of literary sources, analysis of competition protocols, and mathematical statistics. Technical records analysis been done of Beijing Olympic Games 2008, where are fixed the time of covering separate lengths of distance (after 500 m) in 2000 m distance. There was set time difference between the first and the second section of 1000 meters of Beijing Olympic Games regattas A finals – men crews (n = 48) and women crews (n = 36). Twelve tactical variants have been formed. Each of them is described by two numbers: the fastest and the slowest 500 m section of 2000 m distance. For example, tactical variant “1-4” means that the first 500 m section was the fastest, and the final 500 m section the slowest. Tactical variant “4-1” shows that the final fourth 500 m section was the fastest, and the first 500 m section the slowest. Moreover, tactical variants applied by crews who took different places were compared. The largest number of men and women rowing crews applied 1-3 and 1-2 tactical variants in the final A. 1-4, 4-2 and 4-3 tactical variants were used more seldom. Although men and women crews usually applied 1-3 tactical variant, by using this tactical variant 52.4% of men and 50% of women crews won medals. Tactical variant 4-2 was applied more seldom but it was more effective. In the final A, it was used by 6.3% of men crews and 13.9% of women crews. By using this tactical variant 66.7% of men crews and 80% of women crews won medals. In the Beijing Olympic Games final A, the smallest time differences between the first and the second 1000 meters were found in men’s single scull and men’s four classes, women’s eight class and among the crews who took higher places.
