Er wurde von rund 1500 Deligierten besucht und Hitler nutze ihn zur Vertuschung seiner Aufrüstungs- und Kriegspolitik. Eine bedeutende Rolle in der Freizeitsportbewegung spielt zwischen 1936 und 1939 auch in Itatlien. sas N2 - The paper aims to give a detailed analysis of the “recreation congress”, held by the national socialist organization “Kraft durch Freude” (KdF) in the year of the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936. The paper is based on the study of publications as well as records of the “Deutsche Arbeitsfront”. For the first time, this congress is discussed in the broader context of Olympic history. The first such congress was held on the occasion of the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. At the next congress in Hamburg in the summer of 1936, Germany effectfully presented itself as a home of “joy and peace”, admired and applauded by the bourgeois recreation movement. The IOC unscrupulously supported this event by delegating some of its prominent officials to this spectacle. The proceedings of the congress will be discussed in detail. Next, the following trends in international “recreation policy”, which was strongly dominated by German influence, will be outlined. The paper closes with a comparative analysis of international press commentaries on these developments.
